Blogmas Day 8!
This past weekend was the performances of my Christmas play, The Homecoming. This show is based off the book which spawned the famous television show The Waltons. The Homecoming follows the Spencer family as they wait for their father to arrive home from work for Christmas Eve. The year is 1933, the family is suffering through the depression, but they continue to carry on because of their extreme love for each other. The Spencer's have eight children, the oldest being Clay-Boy (John-Boy from the television show). Mama holds the family together during the week when Clay is away working. Clay-Boy is an aspiring writer, and he tells the story of his family's suffering, desperation, but also joy and love. The Homecoming is a very heartwarming show that is perfect for reminding you of the importance of family during the holiday season.
This show was an absolutely joy to perform in. I played the mother, Olivia Spencer, a women who needs to remain strong for her family, but gradually losses her confidence that Clay will ever return home. I had an amazing time being mama, and putting myself in her place. I love acting for the ability to become someone else; I much prefer being someone else. It's very therapeutic in a way. Acting is my heart and soul. It will always be my greatest passion, so it was great to be able to play such an amazing, powerful, strong character.
Here are some snaps from our rehearsals from the first read through to production.

Our house is finally coming together! But it may need a little paint job...
Mama's kitchen supplies.
Some cute Christmas decorations for the Spencer Family Christmas tree!
When the lights are added is when everything begins to fall into place for me. It makes everything feel more real. You can't see the audience anymore, so you feel secluded on stage as if you really are in your family's house. Lighting and costumes are always a big part of getting me into character.
The super cute barn scene with the Spencer children!
My great costume... (Note sarcasm)
Here are some pictures from our cast photo board!
Look at all those children!
It's tradition that each year the cast gives our amazing directors, costumer, and stage manager a gift of gratitude for all the work they do for us. I was in charge of the gift this year, and I thought I would stick with the Christmas theme. For our costumer, stage manager, and co-director I got them Christmas stockings with their name followed by Spencer, making them a part of our huge Spencer family. Also, the stockings were signed by everyone in the cast.
I got our director a little Christmas tree. There is a scene in the show where Clay-Boy and the rest of the children decorate the Christmas tree... Mama wants to try to keep some normality in the household so the children don't get upset that their father isn't home yet. On top of the tree is "Grandma Spencer's sliver glass star!" All the bulbs on the tree are signed by the cast with their name on side and their character's name on the other.
