May the 4th be with you!
We all have them. Those films that we just can’t watch enough. Movies that no matter how many times we’ve seen it, we always have to watch it again; television shows that we’ve seen every episode at least three hundred times. We all have a favorite piece of cinematic work. But what makes these films so “rewatchable?” Everyone has different reasons for why they have chosen these films as their tokens of love, but here are mine.
Actors
I love to watch actors; I love to learn from their performances. I feel the best way to learn how to be a great actor is by watching great actors. Being an actor, I find myself watching the most inspiring performances over and over again. I have this idea in my head that if I constantly watch these amazing performances than I will become a good actor myself (... Not sure if it has worked yet or not... I'll let you know...). Ever since I was a little girl, I would stare at screen and became completely enchanted by the actors. I would even reenact many scenes with the actors on the screen (Not going to lie, it was mostly Harry Potter.... I can quote all eight movies from memory). But nowadays, one of my favorite performer to learn from is.... Come on, you guys and guess it... Benedict Cumberbatch. Oh my, what a surprise! I would have never guess that! Yes, it's true, I like Benedict Cumberbatch. Benedict is a fantastic character actor; he completely becomes his characters. He is definitely one of those actors that I will cling onto every project he does. I want to learn as much as I can from him because he is just incredible. I think he is one of the finest actors, and his Sherlock Holmes and Julian Assange are just impeccable.
Cinematography
I'm a visual movie goer. If I'm not captivated by the "look" of the movie, than I usually won't enjoy it... Or I'll just get bored and do the worst thing a movie goer can do: play on my phone! So, my most favorite movies have some of the best cinematography; well, at least the best cinematography in my eyes. The Wind that Shakes the Barley has absolutely stunning cinematography. The Irish landscape makes for beautiful scenery, but is just as important when telling the story. Although scripts are important, I find that directors who put just as much emphasis on visual storytelling create the best works of art.
Characters
To me, well developed characters are far more important than any plot. I need to understand the characters I'm watching on screen. It's not that I need to relate to them, but I need to know who they are. My absolute favorite example of phenomenal character work is in the television show The Hour. The characters of The Hour are probably my favorite rag tag bunch. Each time I rewatch this show I notice something more intriguing about each character. I pick up new quirks and personality traits. Each character has a story; each character has a purpose. From Freddie to Mr. Wengrow, I feel I know each character as a friend, a confidant (even though I probably wouldn't trust Freddie as a confidant... He's a bit erratic...), a colleague. I can understand Bel's frustration at Freddie's persistent arrogance, I feel Marnie's pain when Hector doesn't come home. It's these type of character that bring life to a piece of art.
My love for The Hour is so strong... And I still cry everyday because it has been cancelled.
Story
Well, this is an obvious one... Most people do enjoy a well written story. But here lies a story you want to enjoy over and over again. You want to relive the laughter, the tears, the fear, and the adventure. They're the stories that never get old. My favorite story of all time has to be Harry Potter. He's a classic. I grew up with the trio; I have spent the majority of my young life engulfed in Wizarding World and all the mischievous adventures at Hogwarts. The Harry Potter film series will always hold a special place in my heart; Harry's story will live on forever. I will be watching Daniel Radcliffe run around corridors waving a wand until the day I die.
So, after all this blabbing, what are my most rewatched films and TV shows?
You, know I just realized they're all British films... I think it's safe to say the Brits do create the best cinema.
All of the films and television shows fall under each of these categories. They transport me to a new world of excitement and adventure, they intrigue me with their lively characters, and they have entertained me many of times over. It's these works that have created that undying love for film inside of me.
So, now that you know my favorite movies and TV shows, what are yours? What films have you watched over and over again? What television shows have brought you the most joy over the years? Leave me a comment below with your answers!
