May Watch List

Posted on 09:38 by smith
Pinch Punch First of the Month!

It's not very often that you find a good, well written female character in films or television. Usually they just act as the damsel in distress for hero to save. Well, I'm tried of that, and I hope you are too! Let's bring in better female characters, and have more powerful females as leads. As Cate Blanchett said in her Oscars speech, "Audiences what to see [female leads] and, in fact, they earn money." So, hello, Hollywood! Wake up and get with the Twenty-first century; women are ready to rule the big screen! Here are my top five favorite female centered projects!

The Bletchley Circle

Why It's A Must Watch: The Characters
I absolutely love the concept of this show. The Bletchley Circle is a detective story (which I absolutely love...) that follows a group of intelligent women as they solve the crimes the men at Scotland Yard can't. These women hold their own and prove that their intelligence is far greater than any man of power. I have been particularly loving series 2 of this show! It's very intuiting and the ladies are even better than ever. The Bletchley Circle has definitely become one of my favorite shows!

The Bletchley Circle series 2 finale airs this Sunday at 10 PM on PBS.

Blue Jasmine

Why It's A Must Watch: Cate Blanchett
When talking about empowering women, Cate Blanchett is one of the first that come to mind. Cate is known for playing fantastic female characters to a tee, and Jasmine is no exception. She creates a character that is dynamic and realistic; a character most women can relate to. And not to mention, she took home all the  award season this year for this role.

August: Osage County

Why It's A Must Watch: The Cast
With a cast like Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Margo Martindale, Julianne Nicholson, Juliette Lewis, and Abrigail Brenslin, you know you are going to be getting the best female acting has to offer! The ladies in this cast deliver impeccable performances... Well, we all know Meryl always gives flawless performances. This story about powerful women is translated perfectly by a powerful female cast. And, not to mention, the male cast is pretty fantastic, as well.
You can read my review of August: Osage County right here!

Philomena

Why It's A Must Watch: The Story
Philomena tells the story of a women searching for her long-lost child. It  depicts the love a woman has for her kin, a feeling all mother's can relate to. Philomena tells the most beautiful story of motherhood, family, and love. And plus, who doesn't love Judi Dench? She is everyone's favorite grandmother.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Why It's A Must Watch: Rooney Mara
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is Rooney Mara's breakout performance. She is fearless and powerful in this role. She completely embraces her character, and proves herself as one of the best female actors. Although she's performing alongside the force that is Daniel Craig, she holds herself strong and carries the film flawlessly.
