January Watch List!

Posted on 10:16 by smith
Happy New Year!

So this is it. 1/1/14. The day we have all been waiting for; Sherlock series three is here! Finally after two years (we’ve waited for Sherlock just as long John has) Sherlock is returning. In honor of this momentous occasion, I have compiled a list of my favorite detective stories (*Irene Adler voice* I like detective stories). I actually do love mystery movies quite a lot; they are always the most exciting stories for me. So, here is my January Mystery Watch List!

Sherlock

Why It’s A Must Watch: It’s pure perfection!
Obviously, I am obsessed with this show! From the scripts to the acting to the production, everything about this show is spot on! Sherlock arrived from the creative, fan boy minds of Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. What makes Sherlock so spectacular is the devotion Steven and Mark have to Arthur Conan Doyle’s original work, and to Sherlock Holmes himself. Aside from the amazing scripts, you have a set of actors that are just phenomenal. Benedict Cumberbatch is wonderful as the clever, arrogant detective. Martin Freeman delivers a fantastic performance as Sherlock’s partner in crime, John Watson. And Andrew Scott will surly be missed as the flamboyant evil mastermind James Moriarty. The whole cast delivers breathtakingly beautiful performances, which is really what keeps me coming back for more! Also, each episode is exquisitely directed and shot; Sherlock is just an absolutely beautiful visionary masterpiece. Series three is sure to be amazing! I can’t wait to find out where Sherlock and John go next!

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

Why It’s A Must Watch: The Cast
Tinker Tailor has a cast of Britain’s greatest actors. From Gary Oldman to Colin Firth and Tom Hardy (…. *whispers* and Benedict Cumberbatch….), this movie has to be one of the finest acted films of this age.  Each actor brings something amazing to their character, which helps to propel the story to its ultimate climax. Gary Oldman is the obvious standout in the lead role of George Smiley. The tension in this film is built through the subtle emotions expressed in each actor. Tinker Tailor has fantastic characters with an intriguing detective story.

Memento

Why It’s A Must Watch: The Concept
When I first watched this I had no idea what it was about; I simply watched it because Christopher Nolan is a visionary. Being a Nolan film, I most certainly wasn't disappointed. I don’t want to give too much of the plot away because it is essential to the viewing experience, but Memento is defiantly has a unique storytelling concept that will keep you engaged the whole film. You will definitely be confused, but that’s okay; it all comes together in the end. If you love a complex plot, Memento is the film for you!

Inception

Why It’s A Must Watch: The Story
Speaking of Christopher Nolan, Inception is another masterpiece from this fantastic director. This film took the world by storm when it was released. It spawned many theories about the ending, and still, four years later, many viewers don’t know what happened. Regardless of what you thought happened at the end (I personally thought Cobb was in limbo the entire movie), there is no denying that this story is incredible. I love stories about dreams and the human mind, so Inception's concept of entering someone's dreams was like the coolest thing ever. Inception is original and complex; a film that will be around for ages.

The Shining

Why It’s A Must Watch: The Symbolism
There is no denying that The Shining is one of the most analyzed films of all time. What is so special about this mystery film is the underlying meanings and sub stories that are embedded within it. Sure you have a horror film on the surface, but underneath go have something far more than a man going crazy. The mystery of The Shining is finding the hidden clues. If you are interested in learning more about the symbolism in The Shining, there is an awesome documentary on Netflix called Room 237 about hidden meaning within the movie. It's super cool.

If you are going to watch Sherlock tonight, enjoy! I am so excited to see what Steven and Mark have invented this time! Everyone has been singing the praises of the script and directing this time around, so that is getting me even more pumped! Plus, the Sherlock and John reunion is sure to be like the best scene in history of television! Have fun!
